AYURVEDIC PRACTICE TODAY
Ayurveda was outlawed in India for over 250 years during the British reign. When it resurfaced, it was in the context of British Allopathic Medical Schools. For this reason, even Ayurvedic practitioners trained in India have a more allopathic style of practice these days. Interestingly, the resurgence of Vedic culture outside of India has birthed some of the more traditionally inspired ayurvedic training programs. Of course, none of these is as thorough as traditional gurukula and study of the ancient texts, which is a rare opportunity these days. The growing number of ayurvedic students around the world are spurring the growth of educational opportunities in this incredible science.
Most practitioners today are either educated in India with a B.A.M.S. degree, or have graduated from a certification program in the U.S. Currently, there is not an accreditation board for ayurveda, nor set standards for practice. For this reason, how a practitioner approaches ayurveda is greatly varied and influenced by one’s personal background.
